At some point in the last couple months (Yelp is not showing me the exact date), I got a message from the owner. I love receiving those, as it demonstrates to me that they care enough to respond and my hope is that it translates into an upgrade, which is a win for everyone. This message wanted feedback about how to improve and as we all know time has a way of slipping, I realized it had been longer than I felt was reasonable for me to comment and so I told him I'd be back to re-evaluate the place and offer more current commentary, which is what this review will mostly be. A couple things I want to note before I get to that. First, I would not have returned to this place without his invitation. Owners should take note of this. Your messages, particularly when they are positive and encouraging, DO matter to those of us who are trying to make Yelp better and thereby have Yelp be in a position to positively affect the community. Second, without trying to give anything away, I also withdraw nothing from my first review. It is as relevant and accurate now as when I wrote it, unfortunately. In fact, were it not for the friendly service, I would have been sorely tempted to downgrade the rating. As to the experience, when I walked in the front door, I was pleasantly surprised. There seemed to be a very slight remodel to the last time I was there (or maybe I just didn't notice earlier) and it was considerably brighter and cleaner than I remembered. The menu board was a lot more legible as well. I also like how they list all the ingredients to a particular menu item. I wish everywhere did that. The space, however, is kind of odd and I think a little focus would go a long way, i.e. is this going to be a get-your-sandwich-and-GTFO or is it supposed to be more a sit-down affair? As it is, this place currently does neither well. That would perhaps be my first hint. Speediness is also as questionable as always and I spent a lot more time here waiting than appropriate for the customer volume at the time of my visit. Drink selection is another thing in dire need of improvement. The soda fountain was chock full of undrinkable garbage, which left the iced tea. Iced tea, despite a sign proclaiming its wonderfulness, was anything but and even sugar didn't help it much. The fries were done very well, though, nice and crisp and on the level of one of the Greek burger places at their best. The entrees again are in need of help. The bread was good, but there was too much of it, especially in proportion to what was within it. Either the meat and toppings need to increase or the buns need to decrease. There is a motif to this place, which seems to be all of the various toppings inside, next to the bread, then the meat, then the cheese, then tomato slices on top. This was on both the Chicago dog and the pastrami sandwich I got. This also should be tossed out. I don't know if it's an attempt to be unique or something else, but it winds up being a pain, particularly if there is too much of something or if you want to add something, say some jalapenos in a 1.25 oz. solo cup that you just paid $.75 cents for and which have neither spice nor flavor. The Chicago Dog...tomatoes diced, not sliced, toppings do not go between the dog and the bun, unless it is mustard and maybe relish, but mostly just mustard. Dog, while good-tasting and not at all Oscar Mayer-ish, also was split, which is another no-no. Dog should be whole or it becomes a hot dog sandwich. Sports peppers were also decent. Relish was ghastly. Celery salt doesn't really work on the tomato slices on top of everything else. The Pastrami sandwich...I like a Pastrami sandwich a great deal and have had a lot of them. One thing I've never had on them elsewhere is lettuce and one thing I had here that I want to never have again on one is hot lettuce. This also came covered with tomato slices, which were dreadful. Mustard was a bit light. Swiss cheese on this is a bit atypical, but was ok. Pastrami meat was bland and sort of off-tasting and did not even slightly resemble actual Pastrami. Possibly I got roast beef. That I can't tell conclusively should be read as a huge problem. The main feedback for the owner is that this place is not competitive to the other sandwich places out there, which have all, chains included, stepped up their quality level considerably. There are several better choices, even in the immediate area. I drove by a couple of them getting here, in fact. Right now, the quality of nearly everything there, aside from the bread and fries, is suspect and this is just not up to the new standard of other places. My advice is to go to some of the competition, take notes and improve the quality to at least be in the running. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to come up with a "ringer" sandwich, that only you have or of a certain type that you do unarguably best.

An SLC standby. Solid sandwiches, both hot and cold. Fast friendly service. Great prices. Fry sauce.

Wow! These sandwiches are so good. Well I get the same one every time so I can only speak for the one:). But the quality fresh ingredients and the delicious fresh bread, they all must be delicious!

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place! This place rocks! They have one of the best veggie burgers around, they are so friendly and always remember my order when I walk in! It's not the classiest lunch spot but they serve delicious food relatively quickly so what more can you ask for?

The food wasn't anything remarkable just some regular sandwiches. I wouldn't choose this place again the next time I make a trip to SLC.

Consistent quality for the 20+ years I've been coming here. I hope it never changes. Italian meat is my usual go to.

It took a little while to get my food, but it was good. I got the chicken philly no mayo. There were actual chunks of chicken! Could have used more onions and provolone, but all in all a good sandwich! Bread had good flavor and was fresh. Fries were good and hot! Small place but clean. Parking can be tough too. I would go back for sure!

I've only eaten here a couple of times, but every time I go in, there is a line of 10 to 15 people, always a good sign. And, just like the line indicates, the food is mmm, mmm good! Sandwiches are fantastic at a great price. I'm a sucker for good food for a good price! They will make accommodate any special requests, and are great at will large orders for work. A couple of weeks ago we order 8 sandwiches and all we perfect and the order was ready to go at the time they said. Can't wait to go back!

Years ago, we lived in Salt Lake. I found Grinders 13 and their breaded veal cutlet sandwich. Yummy! Used to have at least one every month. Then we moved to Seattle. Haven't found anything close to this sandwich anywhere in Seattle. So now, every time we go back to Salt Lake, I cross my fingers and hope this place is still around and I can have my sandwich. Just got back from a visit to SLC. First thing we did, upon getting the rental car and pulling out of the airport? YUP! "Give me the largest breaded veal sandwich you have, with extra gravy." Mmmmmmmmm!! Can't wait until we get back there again. Please, please, please - do not ever close shop!!

Excellent sandwich shop. Love their fries and the Philly steaks. Bread is moist and filled with delicious meat. Fries are crisp and served hot. Yum! Prices are a little high, but the food is totally worth it. Much better than Moochies IMO.

Tried this place on a whim. We really liked it! I love supporting local businesses and this one we will visit again if in the area. I got the Philly cheese steak- it was really good! Husband got the chicken cutlet- it was great too!

They have the most delicious Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich that I've ever had. I'm big Philly addict and these are definitely the best. They are a very friendly staff as well and have enjoyed getting to know them.

The best veggie sandwich in town! I am tired of the slimy tasteless typical veggie sandwiches that the majority of sandwich shops offer. Grinders veggie is cool and crisp with a nice shredded provolone and a light smear of mayo. The bread is perfect! It's nice and soft on the inside with just enough chewiness on the outside, never soggy and never dry. We love this location :)

Great Philly, I looked forward to going back and trying some of their other delicious looking subs!

A favorite go-to each time I'm in town for work. Hot steak and mayo with cool lettuce and onion on a warm chewy roll. Simple.. Delicious cheese steak. Great fries too. Great place for a fast lunch when a little grease is what you crave. Love it.

I lived in Philadelphia for 10 years and when I want the best Philly Cheese Steak I skip over 4th street at Pat's or Gino's and I fly to Salt Lake to go to Grinders 13. There Philly Cheese Steak is the best! I'm sure everything else on their menu is great, but I have only ever had the Philly Cheese Steak. Yum!!!

Wow! The food is always so fresh and tasty here. I just had the pepper steak and will definitely order it again. I usually get the cold ham and cheese which comes with so much ham and cheese that it is falling out of the bun. Come here and you will not be disappointed. I've been a customer for years and I appreciate that it is a locally owned, independent business where the owner is most likely the one to take your order.

This place is family owned and operated and has been since day one. I absolutely love their.sandwiches, with the Texas Burger Deluxe and Veal being favorites. If there is better fry sauce in SLC - I haven't found it. Always excellent!

Cool place, super quick service, like you are in and out of there is less than 4 minutes....... Coming from a town that had multiple delicious sandwich spots I find it necessary to find one in the town that I currently reside, Salt Lake City is where I be these days and this is the sandwich shop I go to, so far just have gotten the Italian meats, they add the oil and vinegar just like I love, the one thing that is a little different is the provolone pieces that they put on top, customer service is beyond on point they start getting your order ready once you come inside whether you have paid or not....... LOVE THIS STUFF, headed here today

Better than Philly cheesesteaks. Love all the sandwiches I've had here.

I have been here several times and it is usually very good, but I went last Saturday and it was awful. I ordered a BLT and there were only two small slices of bacon on the sandwich and the rest was piled with lettuce and only two little tomatoes. The Salisbury steak sandwich was skimpy and it is usually piled with meat and gravy. I spent $21 for three sandwiches that were skimpy and not good at all. I do not think I will go back.

Get the cheese steak! I love it smothered with the jalapenos that come on the side. Grinders is one of my favorite sandwich places in Utah. The interior could use a facelift, but who cares when the food is that good?

Mmmmm nom! This place is great when you are craving a sammich but don't want to go the subway route. I usually try what's on special..you can never go wrong. Moe is usually behind the counter so it makes it a really personal touch. Someone must love their business and care a lot about it to be there all day everyday!

Their next advertising campaign should feature the following: "Un-cooked and cold philly cheese steaks to-go".

I'm so glad these guys are still around. I used to eat at the location on the west side every week years ago. I finally got a chance to go the state street location this week. For some reason I was in the mood for cheese steak all week and hit 3 different place (I wont waste any-ones time reviewing scaddys, lets just say I wont be back) Anyway I'm happy to say nothing has changed quality wise since Sylvia and her husband retired, I still love the Cheese steaks they put out.

I love Grinders 13, it has been consistently one of the best places to get a great sub for many years. I ate my first Ham and Cheese sub as a teenager and it was awesome then and it is still the best. The food is great, the service is great and you know what you are going to get. My favorite is the Cheese Steak and my kids love the Ham and Cheese. Mo and Sylvia produce a great product and that hasn't changed for 30 years. I've been to Moochies but Grinders 13 is still my fav.
